In August 2007 Sophie Lancaster (20) and her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, were attacked by a group of teenagers. This happened in a park in Bacup in northern England. The attack was so brutal that Sophie later died of her injuries.

Why was Sophie killed? Simply because she looked different - she was a Goth in dark clothes, with piercings and red dreadlocks. Meaningless, violent crimes like this one are often called hate crimes.

The five youths who killed Sophie and injured Robert were between 15 and 17 years old. They bragged to their friends about what they had done. The leader even joked and laughed during the police interview.

Sophie's mother has started a campaign called SOPHIE. She wants to fight against hatred and violence.
